who?
Hey! My name is Jordan Lavalle, and I am an Ambassador Girl Scout, Troop #94341. At an early age, I knew how my actions, both big and small, can make a positive impact. The strength and bond of a community is so important. I am very excited to share this workshop series with my community and connect with others as we grow together as strong and balanced individuals!
My team includes Ms. Ronee Cozza, a licensed associate and school counselor, who has served as my mentor; and Ms. Gervonn Romney Rice, a Teaneck councilwoman, who has served as my advisor on community collaboration.
what?
I began my research and planning for “Minds and Bodies in Action for Mental Health" in January 2020. As a dancer, I understand how physical activity affects both our physical and mental health. My plan is to incorporate dance and movement as a form of therapy to help teens shift their attention from their thoughts to their body. I also plan to incorporate self-growth and positive development through interactive activities that involve goal-setting and mindfulness.
why?
Mental health issues have been on the rise in the last few years, especially during the current pandemic, making it more important than ever. As a young activist, I knew I had the ability to make a difference. I created this workshop series to support teens in my community. My mission is to bring awareness, inspire discussion, and encourage people to seek help, support, and live a healthier and happier version of themselves.
how?
As I experience life, I learn what is most important to me. I want to create a supportive environment in regards to mental health by creating support groups, organizing open discussions, and designing mental-boosting activities. I believe this free, month-long workshop series will be a supportive and effective way to help those who cannot afford support, those who don’t have support available to them, and those who are hurting in silence. Each week of the month will have a new focus for our growth journey! The focuses include physical health, mental health, goal-setting, and mindfulness.
when?
The workshop series will take place all throughout the month of May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month. For the four weeks of May, there will be three workshops per week on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The first workshop starts on May 7 and the last workshop will be on May 30. Each session will be about 40 minutes.
where?
The workshop series is completely virtual, and will take place over the video conferencing platform, Zoom. As much as I would love to have us all come together, it is best to remain safe during these times. You can now participate from the comfort of your home!
